Acute effects of low doses of methyl parathion on human EEG.

2005

Abstract Biological monitoring of workers exposed to organophosphates consists mainly of measuring serum or erythrocyte cholinesterase activity. However, animal experiments and a field study suggest that quantitative analysis of EEG may be more sensitive. In a parallel group design, 25 farmers were investigated, spraying methyl parathion or water for 50 min. EEG was recorded before and after spraying. Serum and erythrocyte cholinesterase activity was compared with intraindividual pre-exposure values. Plasma methyl parathion concentrations ranged up to 12.1 μg/l, methyl paraoxon was not detectable. Based on plasma concentrations, two exposed subgroups were defined. In EEG recorded with close…

Acute exposure to 50ppm toluene does not increase sleepiness

2005

Abstract The Pupillographic Sleepiness Test (PST) is a new neurophysiological method to assess sleepiness. In an exposure study to a constant exposure level of 50 ppm toluene on 20 healthy men, our aim was to find out, if increased sleepiness could be seen with PST. PST was performed before and after 4.5 h of exposure. General complaints were assessed with the Swedish Performance Evaluation System (SPES) self-assessment questionnaire, once before and during exposure. Values obtained during exposure were related to pre-exposure values. Parametric cross-over analysis of logarithmic Pupillary Unrest Index (PUI) values did not show an effect of toluene exposure. In a nonparametric cross-over an…

Synthesis of 2H-Imidazo[2',1':2,3] [1,3]thiazolo[4,5-e]isoindol-8-yl-phenylureas with promising therapeutic features for the treatment of acute myelo…

2022

Despite progressive advances in understanding the molecular biology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the conventional therapeutic approach has not changed substantially, and the outcome for most patients is poor. Thus, continuous efforts on the discovery of new compounds with improved features are required. Following a multistep sequence, we have identified a new tetracyclic ring system with strong antiproliferative activity towards several haematological cell lines. The new compounds possess structural properties typical of inactive-state-binding kinase inhibitors and are structurally related to quizartinib which is known as type-II tyrosine kinase inhibitor. In particular, the high activi…

Akute Trijodthyroninwirkungen auf den Kalium-Umsatz von Meerschweinchenvorhfen

1963

Different acute effects of single-axis and multi-axis hand-arm vibration.

1996

Under laboratory conditions the effects of single-axis and multi-axis hand-arm vibration exposure on several strain parameters were tested in up to 20 male subjects. As parameters of these acute effects, the biodynamic vibration behavior of the hand-arm system, the electrical activity of the most affected muscle groups, the skin temperature, the vibration sensitivity of the fingertips, and the subjective vibration sensation were measured. When comparing simulated three-axis vibration exposure with single-axis vibration exposure, synergistic effects in the form of an increasing reaction could be found. It could be proven that the vector sum of the frequency-weighted acceleration in the three…

Metabolic Impacts of Confinement during the COVID-19 Pandemic Due to Modified Diet and Physical Activity Habits

2020

While the detrimental effects of a chronic positive energy balance due to a sedentary lifestyle have been well established, the impacts of a short period of abruptly reduced physical activity and overeating arising from strict confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic will soon start to emerge. To reasonably anticipate major consequences according to the available evidence, we hereby review the literature for studies that have explored the health impacts of several weeks of a reduction in physical activity and daily step-count combined with modified eating habits. These studies identify as main metabolic consequences increases in insulin resistance, total body fat, abdominal fat and inflamma…

Polymorphonuclear leukocyte membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content in young adults with acute myocardial infarction. Evaluation at the initial …

2004

Our aim was to examine two aspects of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) rheology (membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content), at baseline and after in vitro activation, in a group of young adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at the initial stage and after 12 months. We enrolled 21 AMI subjects aged < or = 45 years (mean age 41.1 +/- 3.5 years) and evaluated PMN membrane fluidity, labelling intact PMN cells with the fluorescent probe 1,4-(trimethylamino)-phenyl-4-phenylhexatriene and the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content marking PMN cells with the fluorescent probe Fura 2-AM, at baseline and after in vitro activation with 4-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and N-formyl-methionyl-l…

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Breast Cancer Patients: Temporal Evolution, Predictors, and Mediation

2014

This study (N = 102 women) evaluated the time course of posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) at different stages of nonmetastastic cancer diagnosis and treatment: during treatment, at the end of treatment, and at a 6-12 months follow-up. We also assessed the contribution of demographic, trait, and state predictors to PTSS, and coping processes as proximal mediators of the relation between Type C personality and PTSS. Results indicated that PTSS remained constant across all phases. There were significant correlations (range = .28 to .81) between PTSS and psychosocial variables and age, but not with other sociodemographic or medical factors. A linear growth curve model showed that hopel…
